What role does the dietitian play in diabetes? At the Atrium Lifestyle Centre we are lucky enough to have Fran Steart as part of our team. Fran has a special interest in diabetes and many years of experience in managing diabetes and eating…
Let’s be honest, nobody really wants to see the dietitian…but I do find that most people during or after having a consult with me say “I wish I had done this sooner”. The reason being, we want to help you! We don’t want to make your life a misery by telling you all the things you CAN’T eat…we want to help you discover how different foods effect your health and sugar readings but also how you can still enjoy eating what you like without causing problems.
My area of interest is in diabetes and since doing an extended course in diabetes in 2007 (post studying a BSc in Dietetics, PG Dip (Diet)), I have had the pleasure of working with other health professionals passionate about making a difference in their patient’s lives. You have a team that want to help you and find solutions to ascertaining improved health.
What does a consult with a dietitian generally involve? If you have never been seen by a dietitian before, I will take an extensive medical history which includes which medication you are on, how often you are testing, any other health problems, as well as a gain insight into what your biggest concerns are. What I mean by this is that something may be more important for you to gain knowledge or advise on rather than me assuming I know what needs “fixing”. I try to make things practical and will adapt the changes necessary to fit your lifestyle and budget. Nothing is implemented without testing and measuring what the outcome is – so I do often encourage a follow up within 2 weeks to see if what was implemented has assisted in not only getting sugar readings better but also hopefully improving overall well-being.
I hope to meet YOU soon!
Best wishes, Fran Steart (Dietitian)
